Is it February? So much is going on right now, it’s almost hard to keep it straight.

First and foremost, Fist Fight in the Parking Lot‘s debut album comes out next week (release date: February 21) with the release show to follow on Saturday, February 25 @ the 31st Street Pub w/ Chux Beta & Sistered. So, there’s that.

Next, the Invader CDs are being wrapped up right now (release date: March 6) and Vulture’s new album, Oblivious to Ruin, is in the final stages of mastering (release date: March 27). I met with the Lock & Key Collective this week and got the Killer of Sheep 7″ off to press and, hopefully, next week a meeting will take place with the members of Sistered and October so we can go over the final details of their split 7″off that’s on the not too distant horizon.

Which brings us to Iron Atrocity Volume 2. For those of you who don’t know about Iron Atrocity, it’s our documentation of the Pittsburgh metal scene, aaaannnnd it’s awesome! Volume 1 (which can be downloaded for free at www.ironatrocity.com) featured 16 bands and had a 24 page booklet that came with it to properly represent those bands and showcase the diverse intensity we have in this town. And we gave it away for free. Why? Well, because I just really liked the idea and felt it needed to be done. Now, faced with Volume 2, we’re going to do it all over again with 16 new bands. And from the looks of the contents on my desk, you won’t be disappointed.

That said, Iron Atrocity is our biggest, most time consuming, most expensive project by far, with no profit return because it’s free and we don’t sell any advertising. Last time, the money came directly out of my pocket, which was fine because it was totally worth it, but I’m not rich, so this time we’ve set up a Kickstarter campaign to try and raise the funds to do it. If you’d be so kind, please check out the page and, if at all possible, do what you can to help our cause — http://kck.st/xH4WGI. Thank you.

Fist Fight in the Parking Lot Verb. \if you can’t pronounce this one, we have problems\

1. A song written by Fred Armisen for a skit from Saturday Night Live called ‘Band Reunion at the Wedding’ where Ashton Kutcher and Dave Grohl do a tribute to hardcore punk with their mock band Crisis of Conformity.

2. An Innervenus rock band formed in 2009 right here in the ‘burgh. A female fronted foursome, this band will rock your face off with their modern take on a vintage sound and captivate you with their stage charisma.

Fist Fight in the Parking Lot is the type of band that you can take your girlfriend to see and she won’t be tearing at your hoodie to leave after the first song. Comprised of Jason Sichi, Johnnie McCallough, and Chris Ruane (MojoFilter, Venus in Furs) along with Abby Krizner (Motorpsychos), this band’s hard hitting sound is certain to catch in your ear like a fire to kindling. Their gritty, raw and moving sound has built an energetic, passionate following of fans all around Pittsburgh and into Ohio where they have actively played during the past year. Being no stranger to a Fist Fight in the Parking Lot show, I have watched them grow as a band and they get more cohesive and tighter each time they perform. The stage commands attention when they perform on it, and you will be enticed to keep listening. Come out and give a listen for yourself!

The Fist Fight in the Parking Lot CD release party is on February 25th 2012 at the 31st Street Pub with Chux Beta and Sistered.

A new year is eternally symbolic of change and reflection. Although it is sad to see the present slowly filter itself into the past, it leaves room for growing and thriving. 2012 will be a very bustling, productive year for Innervenus. New releases mean shows and parties, spring tour, and a burst of new recording to keep the fire alive.

The Innervenus Street Team is in full swing! While we have an excellent foundation of street team members, spreading the word is no easy task. There is a need for online promoting and advertising as well as material distribution in the actual brick and mortar locations. SO… if you want to join the team and have a computer but limited time/traveling capabilities, you can still become involved! Send us an email at innervenus@innervenus.org to get started!

Molasses Barge Noun. mə-‘la-səz ˈbärj

1. A 250 ft container barge used to transport molasses to its New York based distillery that was sunk in 1988 from opening its own ballast tanks.

2. A doomy, sludgy Innervenus Pittsburgh quintet originally formed in the summer of 2008 with the current line-up solidifying in early 2010.

Do you like an abysmal sound that reverberates in your core and fills you with a heavy, musical thickness that’s like hot oatmeal on a cold Pittsburgh morning? Well, then…It’s about time you take a musical ride on the Molasses Barge (definition #2, of course). Amy Bianco’s unique bass cadence rumbles through your guts all while standing out in your ear, holding it down, pulling you through. Meanwhile, Wayne Massey’s stormy percussion hits reverberate through the very core of your being. Then you have Ken Houser and Justin Gizzi’s back and forth complimentary gritty guitar styles that slice like fierce rusty swords in an epic battle. Infused within all of this vehement instrumentation is the powerful, commanding voice of front man Butch Balich. A mad prophet at his pulpit, delivering the verbal message in a powerful punch that pulls you in and makes at one with the music. Have a listen here www.reverbnation.com/molassesbarge or here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nigO5MK6x4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

and then come see them perform THIS SATURDAY at the Iron Atrocity Benefit.

The Iron Atrocity Project

As many of you may already know, this area of Innervenus has taken on its own energy and is quickly becoming a name directly associated with Pittsburgh Metal, The Pittsburgh Scene & Eyes to the Sky Films. It began with the first compilation disc, Iron Atrocity Volume One quickly followed by the Iron Atrocity Video Show series and has compilation Volume Two in the works. The Pittsburgh Metal Community is sponsoring the Iron Atrocity Benefit at Howlers on December 10th. This killer lineup features Molasses Barge, Torrential Bleeding, Tyrant & October. The proceeds will go directly to the Iron Atrocity project to assist with manufacturing/production costs. As always, the compilation is distributed free of charge via limited edition disc copies and download on Innervenus.org. There will be an Iron Atrocity Volume 2 release party in the Spring, so just keep that show in the back of your head with all that music theory and sludge. The video show is released in monthly segments; there are currently three episodes to view. Click this link and it will take you directly to the first episode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3h43CLLKiY&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The release of the Innervenus Newsletter will coincide with the Iron Atrocity Video Show releases, so after you get all caught up with episodes one through three, be sure to watch the NEW one that was just released TODAY!

Mockingbird. Noun. mä-kiŋ-bərd

1. A grayish North American bird related to the thrashers that are known to imitate the notes of other birds.

2. An Innervenus band forged from metal during October of 2008 in Akron Ohio that thrashes and sings a heavy, organic, crunchy song all its own.

If you were unable to attend the Rock Room show they just played, you missed an outstanding show! (Although you can repent on December 3rd m/) Andy’s vocal display was raw, deep and from the bottom of his gut. Such a quiet, laid back guy in person but get him on stage and he transforms into this exploding ball of vocal & crunchy guitar sound. The heavy ambience of Mockingbird’s deep, rugged bass created by Mike is layered with an intense puissant pounding that only Chadd Beverlin can deliver. The Innervenus release IV:014 contains 5 tracks that will almost walk you through a musical journey in your head. Mockingbird’s primary focus is on instrumentation and they write the lyrics around that solid foundation.

IV:014 Mockingbird

This is close to thirty minutes of sound that infuses the listener with a potent fervor. Puma Puncu starts as the shortest track, but is the heaviest along the lines of vocal content. The opening guitar riff in Burdens immediately invokes a feeling of head banging goodness, all the way to the floor stomping drums. The vocals don’t enter until about halfway through this tribal, metal tune and as soon as they do, you feel every bit of the burden. Nephilim captures the essence of the the title with shredding guitar sound reminiscent of a mythical creature; the sound crawling around in the air, slowing into an incredibly sick tangent. Pompeii starts right off with a vocal growl and powerfully takes you almost to the limits of dismal resonation. The bonus track is Trained Apes. This is the longest track on this release and begins with an almost haunting acoustic, crisp melody laid over a myriad of background effects that fit perfectly with the mood of the song. It adds a calm melancholy feel to what can very well become the soundtrack for the mind.

Mockingbird 5 question interrogation

When do you think you’ll be back in the studio laying down some new tracks?

We would really like to be in the studio again between March and May of 2012. It depends on the state of the universe and the alignment of our realities lol.

We plan at this point to head down South to The Jam Room in order to work with Engineer Jay Matheson and Producer Phillip Cope and co-engineer Steve Slavich. We’ve been in contact with them Jay and Phil for various reasons over the last year and are excited about working with them again they’re really good folks down there. We would like to spend a little more time there as we’re hoping to record a lot more material than our last demo.

What do you consider your most profound musical influence as a band?

There really isn’t one. I mean we have such a huge catalog of influences. literally from all types of music. As for recent times Andy has really gotten me into a lot of Harry Nilsson’s work lately. Great song writer excellent pianist. Mike has been blasting Deicide a lot lately so there you go… a contemporary pop vocalist from the 60′s and 70′s and God bashing death metal… When we hang out the record player go all over from George Jones to the Beatles to ZZ Top to Minor Threat to Napalm Death and Neurosis.

What band would you want to fight crime with?

That’s hard to call…Spinal Tap.

If you could play anywhere, where would it be?

Easy THE DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL in the UK’s Donnington Park!

What is Mockingbird’s favorite color?

That’s easy too: Clear

Innervenus Noun. /in-er vee-nuhs/

1. A music collective founded in 2001.

2. The place from which music is born. Abbreviation : iV

It’s the inner part of all of us. The music within… that sound that just ‘gets us’ when nothing else does. It’s the eradication of stress in the head phones or the speakers of the car on the way home from the grind. Sludge… Doom… Hardcore…. Punk…or combinations thereof… it helps, doesn’t it? Helps to release a little bit of what would otherwise be caged & festering. Innervenus = Outlet. So, use us. Use us as your outlet to rock, to shred, to thrash!

We thrive on making records, booking shows, shearing sheep, and hanging out with awesome people sharing ideas. We are a music collective operating as a record label that implements booking/touring support in addition to merchandising & distribution for our bands and for the love of music. We like to work together with musicians, bands, and affiliates for a common goal; and that is to get stuff done. So, now that you know about us, let’s see YOU! Get out there and support your local scene! Come say hi, you’ll find one of us or most of us at the shows listed below.

NEWS BRIEF

Iron Atrocity Video Show on YouTube!

For those of you who have been living under a mossy stone since mid July, the Iron Atrocity Video show is like a local underground Pittsburgh version of Headbanger’s Ball. (if you’re reading this and have no idea what that is, just watch and enjoy!) It will feature a trio of bands from our own area presented in a documentary type format that includes a live performance from each band. All this is packaged in an awesome little clip that takes less time to watch than it takes you to get through the Squirrel Hill tunnels between 3-6 on a weekday! This awesomeness is put together by our good friends at The Pittsburgh Scene and Eye to the Sky Films.

Greetings friends!

As with any dream that has latched onto a big idea amongst a crew of art & music affiliates with some time on their hands, you must always remember where it came from — the roots. The establishment… even if the establishment is sometimes a confusing, misdirected mess, it’s where you came from. The Innervenus record label began as a music collective in 2001. It’s about musicians helping musicians, networking, and helping spread the love of the ‘scene’ in general.

Since then, it has rEvolutionized itself, branched off and become something… else. Something bigger. Birthing the Iron Atrocity project and getting in the face of Pittsburgh, revamping the website to better embrace the world, making remarkable progress in improving both the quality of content and production of the label’s releases and growing the collective 4 fold in the last year alone. What Innervenus strives to do as a record label is be the collective place where a band can go for all aspects of what they need — recording, promotions, touring, and just a general support team to reach a common goal.

That being said, we’re excited. Big things are happening in the ‘making things about music’ business! Listen to the bands, tell your friends, hell – come check out a show and introduce yourself! There’s a pretty good chance we’ll be out somewhere, supporting the scene since the whole reason we do it is because WE LOVE MUSIC!

Thanks.

So, here it is… the new Innervenus website. Ta da! There’s still a few bugs and some minor aesthetic things we’re working on, but it functions, none the less. Which is just what we wanted — more function, less flash. It will most likely always remain a work in progress, but so is life.

This last couple of years has been crazy/awesome for us as a label. We’ve put out more releases in the last 6 months than we did in the entire first 8 years, and every single one is just as amazing as the next. With this coming November marking the 10 year anniversary for us, we really felt it was time to crank it all the way up to 11 if we were even going to do it at all. Some people baulk that there is no place in the music industry for labels anymore, though I beg to differ. But, now that I think about it, I guess we’ve always operated outside of the industry, so to speak, so who knows. Who cares? I think the work we’ve been doing has been quite beneficial. I’m proud of it at least and can rest my head knowing I did something, even if only a little, to help out some bands (including my own) that I truly love and would like to see go farther.

There’s so much I want to say here right now, but A) I’m still just a real-life working stiff on my lunch break, and B) I’m well aware that far too many of you have A.D.D., such as myself, and wouldn’t read it all anyhow. Sooo…

Check out the site. Most specifically, check out Iron Atrocity. It just came out today and it’s super dope!

Thanks for visiting. Come back often. Take care.
