Red Sun Are Celebrating Ten Years of Poor Life Choices!

Heavy stoner/sludge/doom band Red Sun — founded April 20, 2003 in Warren, Ohio — are celebrating their tenth anniversary by throwing a huge concert in Columbus, OH, on Saturday April 20, 2013.

The band — consisting of Zach Germaniuk (guitar/vocals), Joseph Rosenblum (drums/vocals), and Roger Vincent (bass/vocals) — has come a long way over the past ten years and a lot of stories have come out of that: according to Germaniuk, “We started out as three gawky high school kids growing up in Warren, OH (birthplace of Dave Grohl). We’ve had like 5 bass players through that time and I’d say the fact that we kept the band together for ten years through a lot of personal adversity, overcoming addictions, living and working in different cities and still making time for this particular band is a huge milestone in itself. When we started, we were really the only high school band from our town that was actively playing shows in other cities, and I think we really took it to heart at a very young age. I think we’ve made more mistakes than milestones, honestly, but we’re really trying our best to learn from those mistakes and live up to the expectations of our mentors and ourselves, too.”

Red Sun‘s members are currently located across the state of Ohio (in Columbus, Dayton, and Cleveland) but they consider Columbus their home because that’s where they spent most of their formative years as a band, developing their sound, as well as forging a long-term friendship with fellow Columbusites Lo-Pan. Guitarist Germaniuk explains, “They, more than any other band, are probably why Red Sun didn’t break up years ago. They were our guides when we were 19, 20, 21 years old. Playing shows with them, and being as good as they are, you either have to get better or just quit, because they’re going to blow you off stage. Our feeling was, if we could at least be good enough to not look like complete fools in front of them and their audience, we would be OK.”

Some of the band’s more recent highlights include the release of a split 7″ (2011, Innervenus Music) with Mockingbird from Akron, Ohio, as well as a live EP (2012, Innervenus/Unhallowed Records) that was recorded at Carabar (in Columbus) during the band’s summer 2011 tour with Churches Burn (from Columbus) and Pledge of Cain (from France). They later said that drummer Joe Rosenblum‘s grandmother died the day that recording was made, and “there was just a lot of anger and frustration and sadness before the show. So to be able to get onstage and let all of that out was an almost spiritual healing for all of us — you can hear the catharsis in the music when you listen to that recording, for sure.”

Given the fact that all three members live in different cities, they have also found time to work on other projects outside of Red Sun: Joe plays in the hardcore band Swarm and the instrumental unit Matter of Planets, while Zach was invited to sit in on guitar on garage/psych band The Wooly Bullies‘ last record, which has since developed into a new minimalist, ambient project called Loner (which expects to have a debut record out sometime in fall or winter 2013). However, since all three guys are such close friends that really enjoy making music together, there are no plans for Red Sun to slow down any time soon. In fact, following their anniversary celebration, they will be heading back into the studio in May to record material for another split release, while also working on writing new material for a future full-length studio album. They’ve described the songs as “a mix of probably our most aggressive and also introspective songs to date, [although] we’ve always been a band with dual personality disorder: we still try to keep a lot of that teenage punk rock energy in our music, even as we get older and write heavier music to fit the shits life has taken on all of us.” In addition, details are currently being finalized for summer and fall touring. A decade in and still going strong, 2013 is shaping up to be Red Sun‘s biggest year yet!

“Come help us celebrate a decade of lost brain cells, diminished hearing, and blackened lungs!”

The Red Sun Tenth Anniversary Celebration is being held on Saturday, April 20, 2013

A first of the month status report in 30 rambles or less…

The IV newsletter we’re working on for March isn’t ready yet, so here’s a first of the month status report in 30 rambles or less…

  • After literally years of searching for the right partner, distribution deals have been put into place with Get Hip Recordings. Stores and mailorder distros can now get in touch with orders@gethip.com if you’re interested in carrying any of our titles.
  • Submachine & Nomad Queen are the next 2 releases we’re working on. There’s a few others in the rumor mill. More on that later.
  • Storm King has began tracking for a Fall/Winter release, but the band is having money problems like everybody else. Probably going to set up some kind of pre-order soon to raise funds, fyi. Be awesome and help us out when the time comes.
  • Killer of Sheep, Fist Fight in the Parking Lot & Molasses Barge (probably more I’m just not aware of or hastily overlooking at the moment) are all recording now or soon, though nothing has been established yet as to whether or not we’ll be releasing any of these. Regardless, they’re still family, so we support them in whatever path they choose. Time will tell.
  • A bunch of IV shows & events coming up (as much as I hate booking/promoting, I’ve been pulled back into that vortex for some reason. Whatever, so be it). 3/9, 3/14, 3/30, 4/20, 6/22…
  • Mockingbird will soon be hitting the stage again. Can I get a FUCK YEAH?!?!
  • BLACK YO)))GA is getting a lot of attention lately. Classes are growing and feedback has been really positive thus far. We’ll even be featured in a London magazine next month. And here I was just trying to suck my own dick. Crazy crazy crazy.
  • I’m interviewing Motorpsychos for a video thing tomorrow. They also have a new video coming out soon for their song, “Binks”. You’ll see it.
  • Iron Atrocity v.3 is still on the way back burner, but I can now tell you that it has at least made it’s way onto a to-do list, so I assume it will be looked at with more intent sooner rather than later. A lot of you have asked, so there’s that.
  • And finally… I’ve worked with a lot of bands doing a lot of things over the years, but now, for the first time ever, officially, I’m going to produce a record that isn’t one of mine. This could go horribly wrong. My apologies in advance to all afflicted parties.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine Interview

There was an article posted today from Pittsburgh Music Magazine about the Grisly Amputation & Lycosa releases. You can find that article here – http://pittsburghmusicmagazine.com/2013/02/12/the-innervenus-music-collective-releases-two-new-projects/

It was great as it was and we appreciate it very much, but in the process of writing said article, there was an interview between writer, Seth Pfannenschmidt, and Innervenus HMFIC, Scott Massie. Seth asked some good questions, so we thought we post it here in it’s entirety. For those of you who are interested in more details of who we are and what we do, this is for you…

You mention on your website that Innervenus is 99.9% D.I.Y.  Does this philosophy come out of necessity, or are you committed to maintaining such an approach even with increasing success of your bands?

A lot of what we do was founded on our old punk rock ethos. It’s a big part of who we are (Kimee and I), and it’s really carried over into Innervenus as a whole, into the cult.

“Unity! Unity! Unity! You’ve heard it all before!!!”

What makes Innervenus a collective is that we try to use what we have and promote from within. Not only does it help create the overall vibe of what we do (of being more a family than a label), but we try to take care of each other through work and services. We support each other. That’s how we benefit. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room to grow and expand, but we appreciate the close, personal connection more than anything.

Sometimes we use outside resources for certain aspects of manufacturing, but ultimately we try to do as much as we can ourselves. We really like the physical format, and hand manufacturing or hand assembling, we feel it really adds something and transfers a certain energy from us to the end user. So yeah, I guess you could say we are committed to maintaining such an approach. We represent something… more.

Innervenus has a few bands that share members such as Amy Bianco in both Molasses Barge and Motorpsychos as well as Garrett Twardesky in both Grisly Amputation and Vulture. Some labels would discourage such a thing so as to maintain a more direct focus on a specific project. Discuss the relationship Innervenus has with its bands and artists.

Family, friends and cult first. While music may be our common thread, it actually comes in about 4th on the list. Considering we’re a music collective, some people may not get that, but I like to think it’s what sets us apart. You have to think about your priorities. Our connections are more with people than with bands, so it doesn’t matter if they’re in multiple bands. We like it, actually. It keeps us all closer. The network stays tighter. The art and music get better with people we already know that can and trust that will rock it the fuck out.

Lycosa describes themselves as “New school meets old school mayhem.”  What is the creative vision of Innervenus? Are you encouraging your artists to push the envelope?

We’re all over the place (IV as a whole, bands and all). It’s a very organic process, so we try not to stress about defining it. Sometimes it can change with the seasons. Other times, with a shift in the wind. Life and experience should teach you that.

As for music, I like sludge, doom and drone A LOT. Stoner rock. Space rock. 80′s punk rock and punk rock so fast & heavy it that it almost sounds like metal. Old school hardcore. “Metal” metal — thrash and grind are my go to’s. A little Viking metal. Traditional metal. NWOBHM. Shit with attitude. I have a very special place in my heart for Guns N Roses, Skid Row, W.A.S.P. and early Crüe. Some black metal lately, mostly the more ambient and mellower black metal though. I’m not so much into death metal, personally, but it has it’s moments and it’s place, so we put it out. I’ve listened to my share of electronic and industrial over the years, too. Truthfully, I might listen to as much trip hop as I do metal, so you can probably expect some of that to show up on an Innervenus flier or new release list at some point. A lot of blues. Dark jazz. Eastern meditation music. The list goes on and on into the infinite.

I don’t like the idea of limiting ourselves or narrowing anything down to a specific genre, style, or pigeonhole, if you will. First of all, it would cut out too many great things that we could potentially be doing. Second, that would get predictable and boring and shallow and weak, and who wants that? Not me. There’s a million reasons for us to keep it fluid. All you can really count on is that it’s going to be dark and/or heavy (I stole that description from Rennie Jaffe, who was describing Relapse Records in an interview I read once, but it fits us as well, so I use it fairly), and it’s going to be meaningful, not just some bullshit we thought would top the charts. But if it does, that’s cool too. That’s good. It means we all did our part and our job. We want our bands to succeed. WE want to succeed. We just want to do it knowing we did it for the right reasons and knowing we did it in a way where all who were involved benefited from it accordingly.

What convinced you to release Grisly Amputation‘s Cannibalistic Tendencies and Lycosa‘s self titled ep?

Well, Lycosa was pretty much a given since the day the band was conceived, for me anyhow, before we actually even heard them play or before they even knew it. Chris & Amy were in Reducer together back in the early 2000’s, which was the first Innervenus band outside of one of my own. The relationship we developed at that time has remained very strong over the years, and anything those two are a part of is a priority to us. We love them very much as people and will always honor & respect that bond. But after seeing a few shows, witnessing what they (Lycosa) do; the music, the energy, and their emphasis on their people and keeping it real; it really couldn’t be any more perfect of a pairing. Leech is also one of my best friends, we’re like the Odd Couple of Pittsburgh metal. So, there’s that.

As for GrisAmp, Gene (Fikhman, also from Vulture) approached me about manufacturing the CD for them, not actually about releasing it as an Innervenus album, but once we got talking about it, there were just so many reasons that it made more sense for us to make them a part of our roster. Gene & Garrett are both in Vulture, and Vulture is one of my all time favorite bands anywhere ever, so we’ve been around each other a lot already. And Chris Dissell is a stand up guy that I’ve known for a while. Add that to the fact that Mark Palmieri (another of my closest friends) was recording their album, and Chris Smith (long time comrade and collaborator) was doing their artwork, the list just goes on and on. That’s how we make decisions. It’s all about the connections and the timing and the resources and the means. Basically, the stars have to align, and they did.

How do you think Pittsburgh’s metal scene measures up against the rest of the country?

I think we’re holding our own and turning some heads lately. SO many really great bands from around here, a lot of which have made various levels of impact throughout the national & global music world. It’s so humbling that we actually get to work with some of these bands.

Seriously, I was recently told that Pittsburgh is “officially the most metal town on the planet” because we started BLACK YO)))GA. I guess that is to say, “You’re so metal, even your yoga is metal.” Or something. LOL. Hey, that may sound kind of funny, but I’m cool with it and I’m honored. But even beyond that, I think we definitely have something to be proud of, all of us, as the greater collective that is the Pittsburgh metal scene. We’re just happy to be part of it and to be able to make a difference for the betterment of all.

Where do you see Innervenus in 10 years?

Somewhere similar, I’m sure, but much more established, I hope. Whatever that means. It’s hard to predict. It’s 11pm and we’re still figuring out today.

Thank you for your support.

Valley of Steel: The Huge List of 2012 Year-End Lists

“…I put out an open invitation for any musicians or other people who are involved in the scene in some way — I was looking for anything, whether it was the traditional “Top Ten Albums” or something totally off-the-wall like someone’s ten favorite sandwiches they ate during the year. Really, the only rules were that it had to be a list, and involve something from 2012…”

And here it is. Everything from Best Shows to Best Photos to Best Albums to… Best 10 Bands I’ve Discovered This Year Doing Yoga???

Sadly, no sandwiches.

Nov 19

Happy Anniversary!

November 19, 2001.
There’s so much significance to this date for us, it’s hard to even know where to begin.
1. It is our official date of incorporation.

2. To commemorate this day, we named a star “Innervenus” using the International Star Registry (it’s a scam, I know, but I’m retardedly sentimental & hopelessly romantic at times). That star’s coordinates are Ursa Major: RA14h3m7.05 D59°33’1.46″, which would go on to become the title of the first Innervenus compilation CD in 2003.

3. The very first time the name “Innervenus” was ever seen by the public was on this sticker our crew at the time passed out to the crowd at a Pigface concert happening at Club Laga in Pittsburgh, PA.

4. Scott & Kimee Massie, founders of the Innervenus Art & Music Collective, were married on stage at said Pigface show, with a verse in the vows that read as follows:

“Let this ring show where the meaning truly lies… between the deepest blue fire and the blood red skies… because just like dragon’s breath that puts the star inside my heart, we’ve finally found a way to put together all the pieces that we’ve taken apart. You are my inner Venus.”

All that being said, it is extremely important to us, today and always, to not lose sight of these things, because everything we do is the result of that energy. It all started with the love; eternally bound & united by family & friends, and so it shall remain.

Thank you all for your continued support over the last 11 years. There’s so much more to come.

- Scott Massie / Innervenus (inside the goddess of love)
